The Power Of Your Confession

Throughout December I was seeking God just wanting to know what word or words he wanted me to focus on in the New Year. I wanted it to be something that I wouldn't forget by January 2nd, something I would actually meditate on through the entire year of 2022. A couple of words kept coming to mind but I wasn't sure if that was God telling me or just some idea in my mind.

As I was doing devotions one morning I felt God tell me not to read the book that I had been reading. I heard his voice so I wanted to be obedient but I didn't know where to read. I started flipping through the pages of my Bible and just waiting for God to tell me to stop. As I was flipping through proverbs I hit chapter 23 and God told me to go back and so I flipped a few pages back and landed somewhere around chapter 15 or 16. I heard him tell me to go a little back the other way that I had just come from and heard him tell me to stop on chapter 18. I had always heard the verse about the power of life and death being in your tongue but could never remember the reference. As I was reading through that chapter I knew that the words that I had been thinking about were from God.

My 2022 words/ phrase is “intentional consistent confession.” These words came as I was trying to figure out who I wanted to be, how I wanted to do it and what I wanted to focus on while being that person. I knew that in 2022 I wanted to be consistent. I knew that whatever I was doing I wanted to do it consistently. I knew that the things that I would be doing consistently I wanted it to be intentional. Last of all I knew that something that I needed to work on was my confession. I know that the power of life and death are in my tongue and that I need to make sure that the words that I am speaking are declaring good and prosperous things over my life. God has really been working on me with things over the past few months anyways but I knew that he was telling me to carry that into the new year.

As I was doing my devotions on December 31st the last day of 2021 God spoke to me about this again. Me and some friends had been getting up and doing devotions together early in the morning and had been reading through James for a day or two. In James chapter 3 it talks about your tongue. In James 3:5-6 it says Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. I realized that not only can my tongue bring great good and prosperous things but it can also bring destruction. I guess I had always known this but it became much more real to me in that passage. I knew that though I had been cautious with the words I was speaking before, I needed to be even more cautious now.

As I continued to read through that chapter I came to the verses 8-10 and they read But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. I read that my mouth produces blessings and curses. I read that no man can tame the tongue which means only one thing and that is that God is the only one who can tame the tongue. Going into 2022 I want to focus on submitting my words to God and allowing every word I speak to be from him.

Your words have POWER and they can either build or destruct. Even as early as Genesis 1 before it tells what God made each day it says “Then God Said.” Everything that God created started with his confession. And to finish it he says that each thing was good. He doesn't say he made it and said it was bad, it doesn't say he made it and said it was ok, it says he made it and said it was GOOD. He spoke that goodness over his creation, and it was so.
